Pulmonary Embolism in simple language means blockage in the blood vessel of the lungs due to blood clot. When the blood clots in the vein and does not move then it is called thrombus whereas if it travels to other part of the body then thenit is called embolus. In most of the cases these blood clots are formed in one of the deep veins and travels to the lungs. The most common cause for such situation is Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT). Due to the lack of blood supply and low oxygen levels part of the lungs may get damaged. Untreated or undiagnosed pulmonary embolism can be fatal and may lead to sudden death as well.
Formation of blood clots can be due to various reasons that include:
Injuries - Bone fractures or muscle rupture can lead to injuries that may cause blood clots
No-movement or inactivity- In cases where there is no movement of the limbs then due to gravity the blood deposits in the lowest part of the body, which may lead to formation of the clot. This mostly happens in cases where there is long term hospitalization of the patient like in stroke or trauma.
Medical Conditions - There are certain medical conditions that lead to deraranged coagulation profile which can also lead to formation of clots. In these cases regular monitoring of INR values is very important.
There are certain factors that may increase the chances of clot formation or pulmonary embolism. These may include:
Cancer
Family history of pulmonary embolism
Fratures in hip or leg
History of heart attack or stroke
Major surgery leading to long hospitalization
On Estrogen or Testosterone supplements
Over 60 years of age
SYMPTOMS

These aresome of the most common symptoms that have been noticed in tha patients of pulmonary embolism seen by Dr Kuldeep Kumar. However the best way would be to see the pulmonologist if any such symptoms persist.
Treatment of pulmonary embolism depends upon the size and location of the blood clot. Early diagnosis of the same is most important part in the treatment. Diagnosis is done through a X ray, CT Scan, MRI, Pulmonary Angiography, Venography or blood tests like D-dimer. A pulmonologist or a lung specialist is the best doctor for the treatment of pulmonary embolism. A lung specialist can clinically examine the patient to start the first step towards the treatment of pulmonary embolism. There are various treatment methods that can be used for the treatment of pulmonary embolism in Gurgaon, India. Some of the best options used by lung specialist Dr Kuldeep Kumar include:
Anti-coagulation therapy- These medicines are commonly known as blood thinners. These can help in reduction in clot formation.
Thrombolytics - This is the process of dissolving the blood clots or bursting them. This is an emergency procedure and used when it is best for the patient.
Vein Filter - A thin wire is usedto install a small filter in your inferior vena cava. The vena cava is the main vein that leads from your legs to the right side of your heart.
Clot Removal - A catheter is used for the suction of large clots out of your artery.
