Infertility is a condition where a couple is unable to conceive even after 12 months of regular unprotected intercourse and without any use of birth control measures. Infertility can be due to the woman (33%), the man (33%) and by both sexes or due to unknown problems (33%), approximately.
There are two kinds of infertility :
Primary infertility means that the couple has never conceived whereas secondary infertility means that the couple has experienced a pregnancy before and are now finding it difficult to conceive again.
In most of the cultures infertility is assumed to be a woman’s problem which is not correct as mentioned above. Many men in India would refuse to undergo any kind of testing to find out the root cause of infertility and try to get married again to another girl on the pretext of infertility of the first wife.
Although a woman may need just one or two therapies to restore fertility, it’s possible that several different types of treatment may be needed before she is able to conceive. Stimulating ovulation with fertility drugs – Fertility drugs are the main treatment for women who are infertile due to ovulation disorders. These medications regulate or induce ovulation.
Intrauterine insemination (IUI) – In this procedure the healthy and concentrated sperm from the male is placed directly into the uterus at an appropriate time of ovulation for the female.
Surgery to restore fertility – Uterine problems such as endometrial polyps, a uterine septum or intrauterine scar tissue can be treated with hysteroscopic surgery. Ovarian Cysts which are preventing pregnancy can be removed through surgery. The blocked fallopian tubes can be opened either through HSG or by laparoscopic surgery.
In-vitro Fertilization (IVF) – In this procedure the eggs from the female and sperm from the male are taken and fertilized outside the body. If the quality of the egg or the sperm is not good then they can be taken from donors (remember Vicky Donor). The fertilized egg is then placed into the uterus of the female.
Dr Suman Rastogi is one of the best and extensively trained Gynaecologist in bihar, India for treatment of infertility at Umeed Hospital, Purnia. The cost of infertility treatment depends upon the reason of infertility, which can be either male or female. In case an IUI treatment is required then the cost per cycle of IUI could be as low as Rs 5,000. In case the infertility is due to fibroid, cyst or blocked fallopian tubes then the cost could be in range of Rs 20,000 to 70,000 depending upon the condition. If IVF is done then the cost of each cycle would be Rs 1.2 Lacs which may increase to Rs. 1.5 Lacs if donor egg and donor sperm is used. So it is really difficult to ascretian the cost of infertility treatment as it varies from case to case and patient to patient.
