Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) or Posterior Cruciate Ligament injury is caused mostly in sportspersons while playing an impact sport. ACL, PCL and Meniscus are very important ligaments in the knee joint which provide flexibility to the joint and keeps the joint in place during walking and running. The injury to these ligaments can also occur in other people due to any accident. In this injury the Ligament in the Knee gets either partially torn or completely torn. The diagnosis is made on clinical examination by an orthopaedic surgeon followed by MRI of the Knee Joint. In case of partial tear the ligament can heal by giving complete rest to the knee joint but in case of complete tear surgery would be needed. One must wait for atleast one month from the date of injury to go for surgical repair. During this period cold pack must be applied so that the swelling in the joint goes away.
In cases of complete tear of the ACL or PCL Ligament the orthopaedic surgeon would use an Arthroscope to do the surgery. In this type of surgery just 3 small holes are made in the knee joint from which the Arthroscope and the surgical instruments are inserted.
